TEN people were evacuated from a fire in an apartment block in Brunswick on Wednesday morning.

The fire, in Donald Street, caused considerable smoke requiring neighbouring houses to also be evacuated, but no injuries have been reported.

Multiple appliances from Fire Rescue Victoria attended the fire at about 5.24am in response to Triple Zero calls.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find a single unit issuing flames and smoke from the upper floor of a two-storey block.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters conducted an external attack to extinguish the fire and it was contained to the unit of origin.

Ten occupants of the apartment block were evacuated and accounted for.

The incident was deemed under control at 6.01am.

Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and power and gas companies also attended.

MEANWHILE, a man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a Henkel Street house through a doggy door on Wednesday morning.

It is alleged the offender entered the property about 2.30am and left through a rear door after he was disturbed by one of the occupants of the house.

Police were contacted and a short time later, an officer from the Dog Squad allegedly located the man underneath a vehicle parked on Henkel Street. An imitation firearm was allegedly located nearby.

The 18-year-old Reservoir man was arrested at the scene and was later charged by Merri-bek Crime Investigation Unit detectives with aggravated burglary and possessing an imitation firearm.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later on Wednesday.
