THE Merri-bek activist community has been rocked by the sudden death in recent days of climate campaigner John Englart.
Englart, 70, was convenor of Climate Action Merri-bek and although he lived in Fawkner in recent years, was a familiar figure at rallies and other public events in Brunswick with his distinctive orange hair and his two Chihuahuas, Jones and Juliet, in a basket on the front of his bike.
He was a citizen journalist and a prolific contributor to social media and several websites, and a frequent inquisitor during the public question time at Merri-bek Council meetings.
He was passionate about mitigating the impact of climate change and global warming, accessible and sustainable public transport, and human rights, and recently attended a weekly vigil outside the office of Wills MP Peter Khalil in Sydney Road calling for an end to fossil fuels.
Englart was found at his home on Wednesday. He was last in communication with friends at the weekend. At this stage, it is not clear exactly when Englart died or what was the cause of his death, and funeral details are still being arranged.
