The 43-year-old Brunswick man never recovered after becoming unresponsive shortly after he had been arrested.

Praise for ‘good Samaratins’

Meanwhile, police have praised two ‘good Samaratins’ who rescued a young child and an adult from fast-flowing waters in the Moonee Ponds Creek on Monday morning.

The six-year-old girl slipped and fell into the creek trail on Owen Street in Brunswick West about 10am.

A family friend jumped into save the child but both were swept away by the rapid current.

They were spotted by a passing cyclist and jogger who dragged them both from the water near the Brunswick Road overpass

Both rescuers left the area before emergency services arrived. The adult and girl received treatment at the scene from ambulance officers for minor injuries.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the incident in Sydney Road took place at 9.30am. It has been corrected to say 9.30pm.
