A WOMAN has been charged following a dramatic crash in a stolen car in Brunswick West on Friday morning.
The 42-year-old of no fixed address was taken into custody following a short search by police after the allegedly stolen Mazda crashed into an unoccupied parked car and a power pole on Brunswick Road at about 12.30am.
The female driver then allegedly fled the scene on foot.
The crash caused the engine block of the Mazda to ignite on fire, which was successfully extinguished within 10 minutes. Police searching the Mazda seized a substantial amount of cash from the abandoned car.
Police from Brunswick, Fawkner and Flemington conducted a thorough search of the area and, with the assistance of a member of the public, located the alleged driver at a nearby property on Brunswick Road.
She was taken to hospital for treatment under police guard, and was later charged with theft of a motor vehicle, handling proceeds of crime and various driving offences.
Investigators allege that the Mazda was stolen from a Coburg address in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The woman was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.
