What: Pattern Theory: New Works by Geoff Hogg

Cost: Free

Otro Espacio is a new Brunswick art space and is hosting its inaugural exhibition titled Pattern Theory featuring politically charged art opposing the AUKUS pact. Artist, Dr Geoff Hogg, is a Brunswick local known for socially engaged art and is using his exhibition to critique Australia’s involvement in the pact. Hogg’s pieces incorporate materials from his past, including the Vietnam War era, challenging viewers to reflect on political implications.

What: Gladys and the Brunswick Boys
When: 6.30pm, Thursday, May 9
Where: Brunswick Library, corner Sydney Road and Dawson Street, Brunswick

Join celebrated footballer, local politician and social justice campaigner, Phil Cleary as he discusses his most recent project – Gladys and the Brunswick Boys, which documents the fascinating story of Brunswick families during and after the Second World War. Phil’s grandfather Ted Dorian was one of five young men living in and around Barry Street who enlisted in 1940-41. Ted and two of the others were captured by the Germans in Greece in 1941 and spent four years in POW camps in Austria. Meanwhile Ted’s young wife Gladys was working at Miller’s Ropeworks. Ted returned from the war but suffering from severe PTS which impacted on him, Gladys and the rest of the family for the rest of their lives.

What: Historical Walking Tours -Hotel Edition
When: 11am-12.30pm, Saturday May 11, May 25 and June 1

Cost: $15 

Sydney Road Brunswick and the Brunswick Community History Group are teaming up for another historical walking tour. Led by local experts, attendees will take a leisurely walk and stop at five iconic hotels with insightful talks into their illustrious pasts up to their present day. The pubs are the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Retreat Hotel, The Cornish Arms, Phoenix Hotel (now Stay Gold) and finally the Sarah Sands Hotel now called The Wild Geese, where attendees will enjoy a refreshing Guinness.

MOTHER’S DAY

What: JVG’s Mothers’ Day Show
When: 5pm, Sunday, May 12
Where: Brunswick Ballroom, 314 Sydney Rd
Cost: $43.96/$84.76 meal and show

Triple R broadcaster Jon Von Goes’ legendary Mothers’ Day show is back at The Brunswick Ballroom, promising an afternoon of motherly energy and talent as back-to-back mothers sing about motherhood. This show celebrates all aspects of motherhood, from the joys to the trials, the ecstasy, and the mundanity. Featuring some of the most talented mothers in the industry, including Rebecca Barnard (pictured), Barb Waters, Kerri Simpson, Angie Hart, and more.
