POLICE have released CCTV footage as they appeal for witnesses to help identify a man in connection to a brazen sexual assault in Sydney Road in February.

They hope the footage will prompt someone to come forward with information.

A 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted early in the morning on February 7.

She was walking south on Sydney Road between Albert Street and Glenlyon Road at about 6.20am when she noticed a man walking closely behind her. The man sexually assaulted her as she crossed Sydney Road near the intersection of Glenlyon Road, then walked away on Merri Street.

He is described as in his mid-20s, about 170cm tall with light brown crew cut hair and a receding hairline.

He was wearing a red Nike hooded top with “Just do it” written on the front and had a light blue surgical mask on.

Investigators from the Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team have compiled CCTV footage of a man they are seeking to assist with their inquiries.

Investigators have released images and CCTV of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The incident has revived memories of the rape, abduction and murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher on Sydney Road in September 2012.

Ms Meagher was stalked for about 1km in the same part of Sydney Road by her murderer, Adrian Bayley. Bayley, a serial sex offender, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013.

The incident prompted the installation of nine security cameras in Sydney Road as a crime prevention measure.

Anyone with information or any witnesses are urged to contact crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
