A 77-year-old man was also taken to the Alfred with serious injuries and is in a stable condition. He had been able to escape the fire and attempted to summon help.

The fire was deemed under control after 45 minutes.

Fire crews were still at the site at 8am on Friday mopping up the damage. A crime scene has been set up and detectives, fire investigators and an arson chemist have attend the scene.
