AS Brunswick locals head to the polls on Saturday, they’ll have an important decision to make: what topping will they have on their democracy sausage?
The democracy sausage is a uniquely Australian tradition, one that turns voting day into a community event.
Voters queue up to cast their ballot and then reward their efforts with a freshly grilled snag, usually served on a slice of white bread and topped with a choice of tomato sauce, mustard, and onions.

There’s everything from classic beef sausages to vegetarian and Halal alternatives. And it’s not just about what’s on the barbecue.
Many polling locations also host bake sales, craft and secondhand books stalls and, of course, coffee carts.
For many polling places, election day is an opportunity for local fundraising.
With strong community spirit and all-day crowds, voters can show their support by purchasing something on the day.
The money raised goes toward projects and programs that directly benefit the local community.
