UMBRELLAS were the order of the day when showers hit the Sydney Road Street Party on Sunday.

Rain which had threatened all day finally arrived after 3pm but clearly many revellers had come prepared for wet weather. Others paid the rain no attention as they enjoyed the annual event while getting soaked through to the skin.

Festival organisers were praising the weather gods when most of the event took place under grey skies and in humid conditions and the usual throngs descended on Sydney Road.

Nevertheless, the late afternoon weather put somewhat of a dampener on affairs with outdoor crowds dwindling earlier than usual as the rain persisted.

Some stalls also packed up before the official closing of the event once it became clear that the showers weren’t going to stop.

With the section between Brunswick Road and Victoria Street closed to traffic, about 150 stalls showcased a wide variety of fashion, crafts and community causes and organisations, while dozens of food outlets served a multitude of cuisines to suit every taste.

Visitors were entertained by performances on seven outdoor stages, while prominent venues including the Brunswick Ballroom and The Retreat hotel threw open their doors for hours of free music.

The musical adventures continue all this week with the Brunswick Music Festival until a free closing event at Gilpin Park next Sunday, March 8.
